Our Visit
Last visited end of October 2023
This week, we visited Eureka! It was great for both boys, age 3 and 7, with plenty to explore
Eureka is a children’s museum, aimed at 0-11 year olds, which is based over 2 floors. You could easily spend the day here, letting the kids explore each room.
On the 1st floor, there is an all about me section, which is brilliant. They have a baby area, where you can scan a pregnant mannequins tummy and see an ultra sound scan, as well as have babies to care for and dress. There is a dental area, with a huge mouth, which the kids can climb in, brush it teeth and learn all about it. Noah enjoyed the computer, which shows different stages of child’s tooth development, showing which fall out, how they grow and what to expect. There is an an area about the body, muscles, the skeleton, and even a heat seeker, which you can stand infront and see which parts of your body generate more heat!
There is the spark gallery, which is all interactive technology, bright lights, that the children can play with. They have a creative space, which had Halloween crafts (free) to join in with.
Desert discover is a soft play space aimed at under 5’s, where they play.
On the ground floor, our boys really enjoyed the living and working together area, which had a building area, Halifax bank and a M&S supermarket. The boys collected a bank card from the staff and they can put it into the ATM, type in their own pin code and collect a paper note, (which you can take home with you). There were also cheques, which you could again keep, write on and get stamped. In the back of the bank was a safe, where you had to solve the questions, to work out the pin code to see what’s inside. The supermarket had shelves of food, check out stations and trolleys for them to play. There was also a water area, which they can play in, along with a see through toilet with flusher and a bath, which teaches them about water usage.
The spark gallery was also on the ground floor, where you can join in the interactive games (we couldn’t get them out of there!). The sound and space area has lots of different areas where you can learn about sound, how it travels and make your own sounds. They also have workshops running in their theatre.
The sound garden, again for under 5’s is a lovely area, with soft play, you can design your own butterflies on the screen, make sounds with the drums, climb inside the bee hive which was nice.
They have a cafe where you can buy food and drink from, or if you want to bring a packed lunch like we did, you can sit on the tables next to the Halifax bank.
They have outdoor space as well to play, as well an stationary train which you can climb on!
For anyone with sensory needs or who can get overwhelmed in at peak times, the staff advised late afternoon was usually the quietest, arriving 3pm, (they close at 5pm).
They also have a quiet room called the chill out room, which is a safe space to have time out from the museum if needed. You just need to ask a member of staff, who will take you there. If the room is in use, they will find you an alternative quiet space.
There are disabled spaces 50m from the main entrance and if you need assistance or a wheelchair, the staff will assist you with this. The entrance is on the ground floor and there are lifts to the first floor.
